Learn More About Heroin Addiction Recovery at Acadiana Treatment Center
Heroin, also medically known as “diamorphine” is a synthetic opioid narcotic painkiller that is created from the morphine molecule. Medically, diamorphine is used to treat pain; heroin is the street name for the same illegal substance. Known on the streets as “H,” “dope,” “smack,” “horse,” “tar,” and “black,” heroin can be found in a freebase form, which appears as a thick white powder. Freebase heroin has a low boiling point, which makes the drug smokeable. Black tar heroin is a third form of heroin often synthesized and imported from the drug cartels in Mexico. Heroin can be injected into the vein, smoked in a bong, snorted, or inhaled through a straw, which is commonly called “chasing the dragon.”
Heroin is a very addictive downer that after entering the body converts to morphine providing analgesic effects as well as creating a feeling of euphoria. This drug interferes with the body’s natural reward center, which can be altered with long-term chronic abuse of heroin. After using heroin, a user reports a surge of euphoric feelings which is often followed by “going on the nod,” which is an alteration of wakefulness and drowsiness.
Heroin very quickly enters the brain which makes it a particularly addictive substance for many. It’s been estimated that a quarter of individuals who try heroin become addicted to it. Over time, a heroin user will develop tolerance, which means that to produce the same high and rush, users must resort to using more of the drug. If drug use is stopped, many individuals who are physically addicted to heroin will experience negative withdrawal symptoms, which can lead to relapse.
Many individuals who are addicted to heroin use other drugs to enhance the high experienced by heroin. In particular, many addicts like to mix other downers, such as alcohol or benzodiazepines with this opiate to feel a more intense rush. As all downers cause respiratory depression, this can lead to major health complications such as overdose and death. Other people opt to mix heroin with uppers such as cocaine (“speedball”) to feel even more intense effects. Using downers and uppers together is the perfect recipe for heart attack.
With the right detox program and proper management, heroin addiction can be overcome. The supportive staff at Acadiana Treatment Center have treated many people just like you for heroin addiction.

Learn About the Treatment Approaches We Use for Heroin Addiction at Acadiana
At Acadiana Treatment Center we realize that in order to effectively treat your addiction problems we require a variety of different methods. We use a 12-step abstinence recovery model approach to treatment encouraging patients to take advantage of our onsite A.A. and N.A. meetings. The treatment staff in each program will work hard to help you gain the skills needed so that you are able to take charge of your recovery. Depending on the severity of you addiction problems you will begin treatment in either our Detox Program, Residential Program, or Extended Residential Program.
The Residential Program here at Acadiana is a 24-hour medically monitored therapeutic environment. The primary focus is on emotional stabilization, education about addiction, and the development of recovery skills. The Extended Residential Program is designed for patients who have already completed primary care and are stable enough to continue to build on the initial treatment foundation. This will increase patient’s chances of success in a lifetime of sober living.
Detoxification – For those individuals who have become dependent on substances such as heroin, we provide full detox services. Our detox program is a 24-hour medically monitored program where patients are safely and comfortably weaned off of all toxic substances such a heroin. Our constant monitoring helps to reduce the unpleasant side effects of withdrawal.
Individual Therapy – Each individual is ensured to receive at least one individual session a week. However, patients will generally participate in an average of 2 to 3 sessions per week depending on their needs.
Motivational Interviewing – This approach to treatment focuses on increasing an individual’s motivation for change. The goal of this approach is to get individuals to engage in the therapeutic process working toward goals.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – CBT emphasizes identifying maladaptive and inaccurate thoughts that have become an individual’s current pattern of thinking. Once identified, those negative thoughts can be changed to more accurately represent the real world. Additionally, this will help to change negative emotions and problematic behavior.
Rational Emotive Therapy (REBT) – Like CBT, focuses on irrational thoughts looking at how the affect other aspects of your life. This therapy also works to balance the acceptance of negative past events and tolerating the strong emotions that are a result of these events. By altering the way you think, you can begin to change emotions and behaviors.
Group Therapy – Group therapy allows patients to see that they are not alone in the fight for sobriety. Individuals will be asked to write autobiographies about themselves to share with the group in order to get to know each other better and promote group cohesiveness. Groups will be both educational and process based focusing on topics such as life skills, anger management, relapse prevention techniques, and emotional management.
Family Therapy – Finally, we believe that including family in the recovery process to be an essential part of treatment. Sessions will focus on how addiction has affected the family unit, allowing family members to share their own feelings. We provide a 3-day family workshop where family members can learn all about addiction and the recovery process. We will help the individual and family members to set boundaries for the addiction and recovery.
In addition to our traditional therapeutic techniques offered at our rehab, we offer several experiential options to further your recovery. These may include:
- Art Therapy
- Spiritual Counseling

At Acadiana Addiction Center we know that preparing for discharge can be a stressful time. We have faith in your ability to stay successful and we will connect you with the next appropriate steps to help along the way. You will work with your treatment team to work on the aftercare plan that was started upon your arrival at our treatment center. Together you will decide upon the program that will work best for your needs.
Acadiana offers a Partial Hospitalization with Lodge Program and an Intensive Outpatient Program that have both proved to be very effective. Both options provide individual therapy, group sessions, family programs, and self-help support groups. Patients are assigned individual counselors who will work with them throughout the entire process, monitoring progress and offering support. The Partial Hospitalization Program is a daily program that requires individuals to stay in provided lodging throughout the program duration. The Intensive Outpatient Therapy Program is an evening program that is held for at least 10 hours a week.
If you are ready to discharge home, we will provide you with referrals for outpatient services so that you can continue with outpatient therapy. These sessions can help you stay on the path of sobriety and help to process any new issues that should arise.
