Learn More About Demerol Addiction Recovery at Acadiana Treatment Center
Demerol, the brand name for a drug called meperidine, is the first opiate narcotic synthesized as a potential anti-spasmodic, but quickly the analgesic properties of the drug became apparent. Demerol is now used by physicians to treat pain-related conditions such as childbirth, myocardial infarctions, non-remitting cancer pain, and other pain-related conditions. Meperidine is used in the body by altering our perception of pain in the central nervous system and the brain and, due to its potency, is rarely used outside of the hospital. Most individuals who take Demerol for pain management do so under the direct supervision of a physician and suffer very few side effects. However, a growing number of individuals have begun to abuse Demerol for a nonmedical purpose.
If Demerol, known on the street as “Dust,” “Juice,” or “Smack,” is used recreationally to achieve feelings of intense pleasure, it can destroy the lives of the abuser. Demerol is available in oral formation, tablets, or via injection. Injecting Demerol produces the greatest high and can lead to the most serious complications. IV drug use carries with it a number of risk factors, including unclean needles, bloodborne pathogens, and infections at the injection site. As an opiate narcotic, the body can become quickly dependent upon Demerol, requiring higher and higher doses to achieve the same euphoric effects. With physical tolerance comes withdrawal symptoms that can be unpleasant enough that the user may return to Demerol abuse rather than continuing down the path of recovery.
Many individuals who use Demerol recreationally combine this potent narcotic with other substances in order to achieve an even better high or rush. Some opt to combine Demerol with other downers such as benzodiazepines like Xanax or alcohol. This can lead to severe problems, including overdose and death, as all downers can cause respiratory depression. Others opt to use Demerol as a means to control the unpleasant side effects of stimulant abuse, which can lead to cardiovascular collapse, stroke, heart attack, and death.
While addiction to Demerol may feel like a life sentence, help is simply a phone call away. At Acadiana Treatment Center, we’re ready to help you begin rehab and live a life of sobriety.

Learn About the Treatment Approaches We Use for Demerol Addiction at Acadiana
When you arrive at Acadiana, you will undergo a complete assessment to identify your treatment needs and determine which one of our programs is best suited for you. Our staff will work closely with you to establish a rehab plan based on your personal goals and techniques that will allow you to be successful in recovery. Our addiction treatment program is centered around the 12-step abstinence recovery model and has helped many individuals overcome their Demerol addictions.
For individuals that come to Acadiana physically dependent on Demerol, the first step in recovery will be to remove all drugs from the body. Through our 24 hour medically-monitored detoxification process, clients will be gradually tapered off of all drugs as safely and quickly as possible.
Our residential treatment program is offered to patients who either do not need detox or have successfully completed the detoxification program. Individuals in this treatment program will be monitored for safety 24-hours a day. This rehab program focuses on building an initial foundation for recovery. Staff will work to help you become emotionally stabilized, educated about addiction, and teach you the skills needed to be an active member of your recovery.
We offer extended care residential programs for both male and female patients, which are available to anyone who has already completed primary rehab care. These programs begin where your initial treatment has left off, ensuring effective continuity of care. Lasting a minimum of three months, and occurring in three different phases, you will learn recovery tools, relapse prevention, and coping skills.
Each of our programs at Acadiana are made up of a number of treatment techniques. Specific types of therapy we use include:
Individual Therapy – Each client in our program receives at least one individual therapy session per week, however, typically one-on-one sessions are held 2-3 times per week. This allows you time to focus on your problems and track progress made in our program.
Group Therapy – We offer a combination of process-based and educational groups to learn more about addiction and related topics. During group sessions individuals will get to connect with others struggling with similar challenges. We ask that each member of the group write an autobiography and share it with the rest of the group in an effort to bond with one another.
Family Therapy – We offer family sessions to allow family members to better understand your addiction, treatments, and recovery plans. We’ll hold family sessions so that family members are openly able to discuss ways in which your addiction has affected their lives. Additionally, we hold a 3-day family workshop for your family and loved ones to learn more about addiction and process their own emotions.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – CBT helps you identify and alter maladaptive thought processes. This way, you can learn to respond to triggering situations in different ways.
Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy –REBT works to alter irrational thought patterns while balancing acceptance of past situations and learning to tolerate strong emotions.
Motivational Interviewing – Through interviewing, this therapeutic method emphasizes building trust and rapport with the counselor. The focus is placed on stimulating a desire for change and accomplishing set goals.
In addition to regular therapy we offer several non-traditional approaches to help you continue to make progress in your recovery. These options include:
- Nutritional counseling
- A.A. and N.A.
- Art therapy
- Spiritual counseling
- Recreational programs
- Spiritual counseling
