Although the initiation of using a substance begins voluntarily, over time as tolerance builds up and fears related to the ability to function without the drug grow, the individual loses the ability to choose not to take the drug. At this point, the drive to obtain and use the drug has become too intense to resist.  While a person may fight against this urge the longer they fight, the more intense the desire for the drug becomes. Though perhaps a seemingly subtle change, the translation of the urge into a need provides the justification to continue using the substance without guilt. Unfortunately over time, whether it’s due to others negative judgments, self-blame, and shame the individual may come to view this need as some type of flaw or inborn deficiency, which makes matters worse. For some, the pain of how they see themselves in regards to their inability to resist using the drug becomes too great to bear and they either increase the amount of the substance they are taking, begin taking another drug to mask the thoughts or begin considering suicide.

At Acadiana we are here to tell you that a substance abuse problem does not mean you have some weakness or shortcoming that is a part of who you are and of which you can never be rid of. Drug addiction is a complicated and difficult problem to fight and it is practically impossible to fight the addiction as well as all the effects by yourself. A large part of the problem is that the very nature of substance abuse changes the way you think and feel about the drug you are taking until you come to view it as perhaps the most important thing in your life, the one thing that controls everything else.  Even when you recognize the control the drug has assumed over your life, the characteristics of the illness make it such that you are unable to act on that knowledge.

With the right treatment, designed specifically to address the characteristics of your substance abuse problem, you can get rid of your dependence on the substance and reclaim control over your life. At our addiction treatment center, specially trained and compassionate staff can help you acknowledge and assume responsibility, not just for the behavior related to your substance abuse problem, but also enable you to assume responsibility for becoming able to acknowledge your strengths and inner resources.

Why Seek Rehab?

Why Seek Rehab for Addiction at Acadiana Treatment Center

It is no exaggeration to note that substance abuse and addiction can have life-altering, and potentially life-ending, effects; however, with some gentle guidance, you will develop the insight and acceptance of all of the positive characteristics that reside within you that you can utilize to help win the tough battle ahead. At Acadiana we are convinced that each individual who comes to us for help has special and unique qualities which can not only contribute to the success of their treatment but can help others within our community who are also struggling with an addiction.

As each individual provides something that increases others ability to fight their own problem, maybe through offering a different way of viewing the addiction, providing a sense of meaning to the struggle, or communicating a sense of acceptance and unconditional support the entire community grows. In turn, they are bolstered by each individual’s ability to give and receive in ways that make a meaningful difference in the recovery process of each participant in the program. We are committed to viewing you as a complete individual not just a collection of symptoms, and making sure that your needs in all areas of your life are addressed. We have only the highest respect for each person who finds the courage to seek help and face the difficult steps necessary to fully recover. We work continuously to communicate that respect to each member of our community.

Our Philosophy

Program Philosophy and Benefits of Addiction Rehab

At Acadiana there are a number of factors that we believe are fundamental in providing effective substance abuse treatment. We understand how complex treatment for addiction can be, but we also know that it is treatable. Addiction has a significant effect on brain function, emotion, and behavior so we approach addiction from the perspective of focusing on alterable brain functions such as thoughts, evaluations, judgments, and attributions of causation along. Additionally, we focus on teaching you how to better cope with your emotions and control any impulsive behavior which may exist. This has proven effective in significantly decreasing the negative effects of substance abuse, despite the fact that it often takes a considerable period of time before physiological changes in the brain are reversed.  We are aware that no single type of treatment is appropriate for everyone and ensure that every patient has an individualized treatment plan. It is also important to recognize that effective treatment focuses on the diversity of needs of the individual, not just problems related to the substance abuse. We know that often an individual cannot fully express their difficulties completely at intake and even when they can, that their needs can change as they attain greater control, knowledge and skills. Thus each person’s treatment must be continually evaluated and altered as needed to ensure that it meets any changing needs.

Since many drug–addicted individuals also have other substance abuse and/or mental disorders, the evaluation process also must continuously assess additional symptoms that may appear over the course of treatment. We know that not every individual is aware of additional disorders that they may have and thus may not realize just how much their lives can be improved with the proper treatment approach and therapeutic techniques.

We know that addictions affect every part of a person’s life and will always focus on the complete person to ensure all these areas that have been altered in some way will be attended to. We do not believe in just focusing on the physical aspects of your illness. At Acadiana it is critical to us that we find the best way to help you recover based on your personality, background, and experiences. At Acadiana we don’t heal addiction we heal lives.

Therapies & Treatment Methods for Substance Abuse Used at Acadiana Treatment Center

Psychotherapy—individual and/or group—and other types of psychosocial intervention are the most commonly used and most effective forms of drug abuse treatment. While medications may serve an important function as far as treating certain symptoms to help you through detox or decrease the symptoms to a level that enables you to engage in therapy we do not believe in using medication as a form of maintenance therapy. Specific types of therapy we use include:

Medically Managed Detox – Our detox unit provides medical management and monitoring to provide the most comfortable and effective detox experience.

Individual Therapy – Each patient on our inpatient unit receives a minimum of one individual therapy session per week. However, we recognize the many needs individuals with substance abuse problems and co-occurring disorders are facing and on average provide individuals with 2-3 sessions per week as necessary.

Group Therapy – Group therapy has proven to be one of the most effective structures for addiction treatment. Our groups consist of either process oriented groups or psycho-educational groups with skills building techniques.

Family Therapy – We understand the importance of family and significant others in your recovery. At our rehab, we include them in family sessions in order to address a wide range of issues related to family functioning and understanding of addiction and the recovery process.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – This approach helps patients identify and alter maladaptive thought processes as well as recognize situations most likely to trigger their substance abuse and learn to either avoid or cope with them.

Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy – Similar to CBT, REBT focuses on altering irrational thought patterns while balancing acceptance of past situations and tolerance of strong emotions which can’t be fully controlled.

Reality Based Therapy – This therapy focuses on identifying and solving problems in the here and now while avoiding the potentially confusing situation from the past.

Motivational Interviewing – This technique focuses on building trust and rapport with the therapist and through careful questioning works to elicit the desire to change and actions aimed at accomplishing set goals.

In addition to our established therapeutic modalities, we also offer several experiential opportunities to further your recovery.  These include:

  • Nutrition
  • Art Therapy
  • Spiritual Counseling
  • Recreation

Continuing Care

Drug abuse treatment levels and continuing care

At Acadiana, we are committed to providing continuity of care, understanding how anxiety provoking transitions to new and unfamiliar programs can be. In addition to our Detox and Inpatient programs, we provide a variety of other levels of care to meet your continuing needs.

Once you and your treatment team decide an outpatient program is the appropriate next step, you may choose to enter one of our high service outpatient programs. These include our Partial Hospitalization Program which provides daily comprehensive daily services through individual, group and family therapy in addition to participation in self-help support groups. Our Intensive Outpatient Program is a less intensive outpatient option providing a minimum of 10 hours of services weekly in the evenings.  The program uses a variety of groups, individual and family therapy and self-help support groups. For this program, participants must be able to fully participate in a 12-step recovery group with limited supervision and be living in a setting that has been evaluated and determined to provide a supportive and stable environment.
