Learn More About Amphetamine Addiction Recovery at Acadiana Treatment Center
Amphetamines, such as dextroamphetamine and Benzedrine, are prescription stimulant medications originally designed to treat asthma, narcolepsy, and ADHD. Amphetamines are central nervous system stimulants that work on the sympathetic portion of the nervous system. Amphetamines produce their effects by increasing synaptic activity on the dopamine and norepinephrine neurotransmitter systems. Amphetamines block the reuptake of dopamine, causing the release of dopamine from the axon terminals, and inhibit storage and destruction of dopamine. These actions lead to increased levels of dopamine in the synaptic cleft that act upon receptors.
Amphetamines cause similar effects to those of cocaine, another stimulant, which can include increased feelings of power and happiness, appetite suppression, and increased energy. These feelings are what make amphetamine abusers crave the drug. With chronic amphetamine abuse, the brain develops a tolerance to amphetamines and requires more and more of the drug to get high. With physical tolerance comes withdrawal, which can be very unpleasant for many who are addicted to amphetamines. Amphetamine withdrawal can cause serious depression and mood swings, which may cause the addict to relapse and resume usage of the amphetamines.
Many people who abuse amphetamines abuse other drugs to augment the effects of the stimulants. Some will combine amphetamines with downers like opiates, benzodiazepines, and alcohol to reduce the jittery feelings associated with amphetamine abuse. Others will combine amphetamines with other stimulants such as cocaine or methamphetamines in order to achieve even greater levels of energy. Using and becoming addicted to amphetamines can lead to very grave side effects.
Often, people make the erroneous assumption that simply because a medication was prescribed by a medical doctor to treat a medical condition, the drugs are safe. In most cases, individuals who are prescribed drugs like amphetamines follow the doctor’s orders and stop the drug when they no longer need it. When the drug is not used according to the instructions of the doctor or are used by someone for whom the drug is not prescribed, many negative consequences can occur.

Learn About the Treatment Approaches We Use for Amphetamine Addiction at Acadiana
Located in Louisiana, Acadiana Treatment Center is a 12-step abstinence addiction recovery center that uses the most up-to-date treatment modalities to help those with chemical dependency issues. Our amphetamine addiction rehab center has a dedicated team of compassionate staff members who do everything in their power to help you beat your addiction. We take the necessary time to teach the skills needed to cope with life stressors and prevent relapse. We believe that you are fully capable of taking charge of your own recovery and we are here to help you make that possible. Depending on the results of your assessment you will be enrolled in our Detox Program, Residential Program, or our extended Residential Program.
The Residential Program here at Acadiana offers medical monitoring 24 hours a day in a therapeutic environment. This full-time surveillance is done to try and ensure the safety of every patient staying with us. This program focuses on emotional stabilization, addiction education, and the development of recovery skills.
The Extended Residential Program is designed for patients who have already completed primary care either at Acadiana or another addiction treatment center. This program starts where the primary care program left off, expanding upon the knowledge gained in the previous program. Extended residential care programs are used to help increase a patient’s chance at successfully living a life free from substance abuse.
Medically Managed Detox – The detox program at our treatment center helps those who have become dependent on substances such as amphetamines. This program provides these individuals with around-the-clock supervision. We provide medication management in order to detox you as safely and comfortably as possible.
Individual Therapy – Individual therapy is guaranteed at least once a week to each patient, but we try to have an average of about 2-3 sessions per week. These sessions allow individuals more intimate one-on-one time with a counselor so they can work through issues that are of specific concern to them.
Group Therapy – Group therapy has proven to be an effective and very common technique used in the treatment of substance abuse problems. Patients will connect with one another through education and process-based groups while learning how to work together. Group therapy creates an atmosphere where individuals recognize they are not alone in their struggles and can gain the support of their peers.
Family Therapy – We believe that family members should be an active part of the recovery process. By engaging your family in treatment we can help them learn to better understand and support each other, creating better family dynamics. We hope that this will open up the lines of communication between the individual and their loved ones. We also educated family members and allow them to express how the addiction has impacted their life in our 3-day family workshop.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – CBT helps patients identify and change dysfunctional thought patterns and learn to recognize situations most likely to trigger their substance abuse. By recognizing these triggers they can learn to either avoid or cope with them.
Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy – REBT focuses on changing negative thought patterns that may have led to these negative behaviors. Individuals will learn how to accept these past behaviors and how to tolerate strong emotions that they may not always have complete control over.
Motivational Interviewing – Through this technique a therapist will work with an individual to elicit a desire to change and identify what behavior changes are needed in order to accomplish set goals.
In addition to our established therapeutic modalities, we provide patients at our rehab with experiential programs. Some of which may include:
- Art Therapy
- Spiritual Counseling
- A.A. and N.A.

Finally, if it has been determined that an individual is ready to be discharged home we will provide them with referrals for outpatient services.
