Learn More About Opioid Addiction Recovery at Acadiana Treatment Center
Opioids such as codeine, Lortab, OxyContin, Vicodin, and hydromorphone are narcotic pain medications prescribed to treat a wide variety of pain-related complaints, such as migraine headaches, intractable cancer pain, and burns. Considered to be controlled substances that have a high potential for abuse and addiction, opiates are prescribed by a physician for a generally limited duration. While most individuals take their medication as directed by a physician or pharmacist for the duration of the medication therapy, some individuals who have a tendency for addiction may become addicted to the substance.
Opioid drugs are able to produce their analgesic effects by binding to the opioid receptors in the brain and central nervous system and are able to reduce the amount of pain signals sent to the brain, thereby decreasing the amount of pain that is felt. Opioids are reserved for treating moderate to severe pain that is unable to be managed with over-the-counter medications. Opiates are common drugs of abuse because they produce feelings of happiness and satisfaction along with the pain relief.
When an individual becomes dependent upon opiates, his or her brain has developed a tolerance to the effects of the drug and requires more to obtain the same feelings. If an individual who has become physically and psychologically dependent upon opiates, sudden discontinuation of the drugs can lead to serious side effects, which keeps the user returning for more. If none are available, he or she may turn to illegal street opiates, such as heroin, which produces a similar rush.
Opiate addiction is a curable disorder that can be managed with proper detox, therapy, and rehab.

Learn About the Treatment Approaches We Use for Opioid Addiction at Acadiana
When you get to Acadiana you will undergo a thorough assessment that will examine any physical and psychological issues you may be having. This evaluation is done in order to determine your level of dependence upon opioids and decide which program will be best for you. Our main goal is to treat the mind, body, and soul so that individuals can return to their communities sober and happy.
If it’s determined you are physically and psychologically dependent on opioids you’re your first stop in rehab will be to complete our detoxification program. Detox is used to slowly reduce your physical addiction, which will be done under 24-hour medical monitoring. When all of the toxic substances have been removed from your body, you are ready for the next stage of treatment.
Our Residential Treatment program is for patients that are able to fully participate in the therapeutic process. Clients in the residential program will be medically monitored and supervised 24-hours a day to ensure safety. The focus of our residential program is to teach those who come to us about their opioid addiction and necessary skills so that they can play an active role in their recovery.
After a primary care program has been completed, Acadiana offers male and female extended care programs. Both of these extended care programs are designed for a continuation of care that will strengthen what individuals have learned in their primary care programs. The extended care program lasts at least three months and involves three distinct phases, each phase will address and reinforce the skills necessary to maintain a life of sobriety.
Each program at Acadiana Treatment Center provides our clients with a variety of therapeutic approaches to rehab. Some of the techniques we use are:
Individual Therapy – Each member of our program will receive the minimum of one session per week with an individual counselor to address co-occurring disorders and factors leading up to the development of an addiction. However, as most individuals have more concerns they would like to address we provide 2-3 sessions per week.
Group Therapy – Group therapy is an important therapeutic approach we use here at Acadiana. We offer a variety of group therapy sessions, process, and psycho-educational based, to allow you to work through your issues in an environment full of the support of your peers.
Family Therapy – Since addiction problems can affect the whole family, we take the time to help you mend the broken relationships in your life. Additionally, our 3-day family workshop includes individual family sessions to allow our clients the opportunity to teach their family about addiction and recovery.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – CBT is a form of therapy that allows us to help you sort through your negative emotions and thoughts. You will then learn to replace them with more positive ways of viewing your addiction.
Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy – REBT, similar to CBT, is a form of therapy that is used to allow you to better understand that past behaviors should be forgotten and that focus should be placed on the future. You have the opportunity to change your future behaviors and the direction you want your future to take.
Motivational Interviewing – At Acadiana, our therapists will work with you through a series of questions in order to create a foundation of trust. Motivational interviewing seeks to help you learn to change, set goals, and meet those goals.
In addition to our effective therapeutic treatments, we provide several experiential opportunities at our treatment center. These may include:
- A.A. and N.A.
- Vocational planning
- Nutrition counseling
- Recreational programs
- Art therapy
- Spiritual counseling
Opioid addiction treatment levels and continuing care
We strive to provide each person who comes to us an aftercare plan to address the continued needs of your recovery process. You will work collaboratively with your treatment team to develop goals for the future and determine the best plan of action for your next steps.
If you feel you’re ready to be discharged home, we’ll ensure that you have the proper referrals to a local therapist. We’ll also find community resources you can rely upon to continue your recovery from opioid addiction.
We offer a few aftercare programs that have been created to allow you to continue your rehabilitation. Our rehab also offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) that allows for continued daily services provided through individual, group and family therapy. Our PHP is a very structured environment in which you will be provided lodging throughout your journey.
We also provide an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for individuals who no longer need the structure of an intensive program. Clients enrolled in IOP have reached a point where they are able to spend time at home while continuing their addiction rehab. Our IOP offers similar programs to our PHP but only meets in for ten hours a week in the evenings. During your IOP, you’ll be continually assessed and monitored to ensure your rehab is going smoothly.
