Alcohol abuse is a chronic, often relapsing disease in which an individual has a pattern of excessive alcohol consumption despite the negative consequences in an individual’s life. These consequences can include social ramifications, interpersonal relationship challenges, domestic and child abuse, problems with job performance, legal issues, and negative health benefits. Despite knowing these consequences, someone who abuses alcohol is unable to cease problem drinking. Over 14 million individuals in the United States struggle with alcoholism or alcohol abuse.
Many people who are alcoholics develop a tolerance to alcohol that requires them to drink more often and in larger quantities in order to achieve the desired level of drunkenness. Some alcoholics find that their body has become so accustomed to alcohol in the body that it develops a physical dependence upon it. In the event that someone who is physically dependent upon alcohol stops drinking or attempts to cut down his or her drinking, he or she may undergo a period of withdrawal symptoms.
To further compound the problems that chronic alcoholism causes, many individuals also abuse other substances. Some use downers such as prescription opiates or benzodiazepines to augment the effects of alcohol, which can lead to massive respiratory depression and death. Others may use alcohol with stimulants such as meth or amphetamines in order to ease the unpleasant side effects associated with stimulant abuse. Mixing stimulants and alcohol can lead to cardiovascular complications such as stroke and heart attack.
With the proper mix of medically monitored detox, therapies, and rehab, most individuals can successfully overcome addiction to alcohol and go on to live productive and sober lives.

Learn about the treatment approaches we use for alcohol addiction at Acadiana
At Acadiana Treatment Center we provide a number of different treatment methods to effectively treat alcohol addiction problems. The addiction programs offered at our treatment center are centered on the 12-step abstinence recovery model to treatment. The treatment staff at Acadiana is dedicated to taking the time to teach you the skills needed to allow you to take charge of your recovery. Depending on the severity of your addiction problems you will start your treatment in either our Detox Program, Residential Program, or our extended Residential Program.
The Residential Program at Acadiana offers a therapeutic environment with staff providing 24-hour medical monitoring in order to ensure the safety of our patients. The main focus for this program is emotional stabilization, education about addiction, and the development of recovery skills. The Extended Residential Program is designed for patients who have already completed primary care and are stable enough to engage more thoroughly in the treatment process. This program starts where the primary care programs left off, building on previously established knowledge. By extending care, we help increase patient’s chances of success in a lifetime of sober living.
Medically Managed Detox – Our detoxification is for individuals who come to Acadiana chemically dependent on substances such as alcohol. Due to the potential for serious withdrawal symptoms, our alcohol detox program provides around-the-clock supervision. We provide medication management in order to detox you as safely and comfortably as possible.
Individual Therapy – Due to the unique needs of each patient we make sure that everyone has a least one individual session with a therapist each week. We understand that all issues may not be able to be resolved in this amount of time so we try to provide an average of two to three individual sessions per week. This allows individuals a more intimate setting with a counselor to work through more concerning issues.
Group Therapy – Group therapy has proven to be an effective technique for the treatment for alcohol abuse problems and is a major component of the treatment program here at Acadiana. Through education and process groups, individuals will work together to fight their addiction. Group therapy creates an atmosphere where individuals realize they are not alone in their struggles and can learn to help one another.
Family Therapy – We believe that family participation can play a huge role in the success of an individual’s recovery. By engaging the family in treatment, they can learn to better communicate and understand each other. The family can express how the substance abuse has affected them and the individual can begin to see that they do have the support of their family. We also educate family members and address problems within the family dynamic in our 3-day family workshop.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – CBT helps patients identify and alter destructive thought processes and recognize situations most likely to trigger their alcoholism. By recognizing these triggers they can learn to either avoid or cope with them.
Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy –REBT focuses on altering irrational thought patterns while balancing acceptance of past situations and tolerance of strong emotions which many individuals have a hard time controlling.
Motivational Interviewing – Through a series of questioning, a therapist will work with an individual to elicit a desire to change and identify what behavioral changes are needed in order to accomplish set goals.
In addition to our established therapeutic modalities, we provide patients who attend our rehab with experiential programs. Some of these may include:
- Art therapy
- Spiritual counseling
- Recreational programs
- A.A. and N.A.
Alcohol addiction treatment levels and continuing care
Acadiana Treatment Center is not only committed to providing quality residential treatment, but also continuity of care for all of our patients. Our Residential Treatment Program provides similar services as our inpatient program for those ready to move to a less intense setting. When the time has come for discharged into the next step of recovery, we will do everything we can to make the transition as smooth as possible.
Your aftercare plan will lay out everything you need to know how to proceed with treatment. For some individuals, this may mean beginning our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or attending our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The Partial Hospitalization provides daily treatment through a variety of different methods such as individual therapy, group sessions, and family programs. Participants in this program are provided lodging for the duration of treatment and are encouraged to attend onsite self-help support groups such as A.A. or N.A. The Intensive Outpatient Program is not as intense as the PHP and meets in the evenings for a total of 10 hours a week. This program offers individual, group, and family therapy sessions. Finally, if it has been determined that an individual is ready to be discharged home referrals for outpatient services will be provided.
