Every single day, people go to the doctor and are prescribed medication. Most of these medications are taken exactly as directed, stopped at the appropriate juncture, and forgotten about. However, certain individuals may find the feelings that their prescription drugs provide are extremely pleasurable. These individuals may begin to take more and more of their prescriptions to achieve that same pleasurable feeling, often well past the time the prescription was to be discontinued.
Prescription drug abuse occurs when an individual uses prescription medication – a medication that is required by law to be prescribed by a physician and carefully monitored by the DEA – in a nonmedical manner. Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem in the United States, which leads to problems for individuals with legitimate medical conditions as well as prescribers, who are under the watchful eye of the DEA.
The most commonly abused prescription drugs include opiate narcotics, such as OxyContin and Roxicodone, which can induce feelings of euphoric pleasure along with relief from acute and chronic pain. Benzodiazepines, such as Ativan and Xanax provide prescription drug abusers with feelings of relaxation and well-being. Stimulants like Adderall provide increased energy, mental alertness, and overall well-being.
Many individuals who abuse prescription drugs use these types of drugs in order to increase the effects of illicit drugs. Often, individuals who are using downers, such as alcohol will use opiates or benzos to increase the level of intoxication. Others will use stimulants such as Adderall as a means to feel more alert on heroin or other downers. Still, others will use benzos to reduce the unpleasant side effects of illegal stimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamines.
Prescription drug abuse is a growing concern among members of the medical community and individuals who are affected by this type of drug abuse. In order to get help for prescription drug addiction, many individuals turn to the wonderful, caring staff at Acadiana for prescription drug rehab.

Learn About the Treatment Approaches We Use for Prescription Drug Addiction at Acadiana
Acadiana Treatment Center offers a full range of services to meet the needs of individuals who need help recovering from addiction, including detoxification, residential, as well as outpatient therapy. Upon arriving at our treatment center, every potential client will receive a free assessment to determine their specific treatment needs.
Detoxification is the most intensive level of care offered at Acadiana and exists for individuals who have become physically dependent upon a substance. Through 24-hour medical monitoring, we ensure safe and comfortable management of prescription drug withdrawal symptoms. The detoxification process focuses on abstinence from substances and reinforcement of lifestyle changes. Once detox is completed, the treatment plan can begin.
Our residential treatment program is for patients who have undergone detox and are stable enough to begin the therapeutic process. Patients at this level of care will begin treatment in a medically-monitored environment and will be supervised on a 24-hour basis in order to ensure safety. We aim to help individuals become emotionally stabilized, knowledgeable about addiction, and develop the skills needed to take an active approach in their recovery.
Male and female extended residential treatment programs are available for patients who have completed primary care. Both programs continue the progress of primary treatment, allowing individuals the opportunity to continue to strengthen their recovery skills, thereby increasing their chances of living a sober life. This program lasts a minimum of three months, consisting of three different phases. Each phase addresses and reinforces specific skills needed for a successful recovery.
Each one of our programs at Acadiana Treatment Center provides a number of therapeutic approaches. Some of the techniques we employ include:
Individual therapy – Individual sessions are held at least once a week, but tend to average 2-3 times per week depending on needs. These sessions are designed to allow patient one-on-one time with a therapist to monitor ongoing progress and address any issues that may not have arisen during group.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy – This type of therapy is commonly used in addiction treatment helping patients to address skill deficits in emotion management, impulse control, and assertiveness. By identifying these issues, patients are able to make appropriate behavioral changes.
Rational-emotive Behavioral therapy – REBT focuses on the negative beliefs that individuals hold and teaches them how to change those beliefs into more positive ones.
Motivation interviewing – Motivational interviewing is a technique that is used to motivate an individual’s desire for change and to help set goals for where they want to be in the future.
Group Therapy – In group therapy, patients are encouraged to interact with one another and to build a healthy community where they can practice the tools necessary to maintain sobriety. In order to develop a cohesive group, each member of the group is asked to write autobiographies about themselves to share with the group so they are able to get to know one another. Group sessions are a combination of education and process-based groups, covering topics such as coping skills, problem-solving, anger management, relapse prevention, and relaxation techniques.
Family therapy – Family therapy is specifically focused on rehabilitation for the individual and help for family members affected by addiction. Family sessions are held on a weekly basis and gets previously repressed issues into the open.
Family workshop – The family workshop is a 3-day workshop held to educate family members, reopen lines of communication, and help to integrate the individual back into the family dynamic. This workshop also provides support for the families.
In addition to therapeutic techniques, we offer a wide variety of experiential programs that may be included in your treatment plan. Some of these programs include:
- Recreational therapy
- A.A. and N.A. meetings
