Learn More About Codeine Addiction Recovery at Acadiana Treatment Center
Codeine is a short-acting narcotic with effects lasting only several hours after each dose. An opioid narcotic, codeine is derived from the opium poppy and is considered to be one of the least strong of the narcotic analgesics. Other opioid analgesics include OxyContin, Demerol, Dilaudid, heroin, and Lortab, each with differing pain-relieving properties and length of effects. For centuries codeine has been used as an antitussive, antidiarrheal, and analgesic product. However, because codeine binds to the opioid receptors in the brain, it is metabolized into morphine which can also leave the user feeling euphoric and calm. It is these feelings that can cause individuals to become addicted to codeine.
Codeine and other narcotic pain medications are prescribed by a physician to treat a specific medical ailment and, in most cases, are used as specified by the dosing instructions and discontinued as the drug is no longer needed. Unfortunately, due to the pleasurable feelings that opiates like codeine provide, a number of individuals become hooked on codeine as a means to get high and feel amazing. In fact, codeine users quickly develop a physical and sometimes psychological dependence upon codeine, which can lead to tolerance, meaning that more and more codeine is needed to produce the same effects. This can, in turn, lead to addiction, a chronic relapsing disease in which an individual is powerless to stop using codeine even in the face of the damage it is causing to their lives.
Individuals who are addicted to codeine and other narcotics will, after chronic use, see the ways in which codeine can impact every aspect of their lives, but be unable to cease usage. In addition to poor job performance, strained interpersonal relationships, and negative health consequences, individuals often experience legal and financial problems when their codeine supply is cut off. Codeine addiction is a serious problem that requires the caring and compassionate staff at Acadiana to help overcome. You may feel powerless against your addiction, but we can help you see the strength you have within you to beat this disease and emerge on the other side victorious and sober.

Learn About the Treatment Approaches We Use for Codeine Addiction at Acadiana
Detoxification is the most intensive level of care offered at Acadiana. The purpose of this program is to gradually withdraw individuals who have become physically dependent upon chemical substances. Through 24-hour medical monitoring we ensure the safest and most comfortable detox available. Once detox has been completed the main treatment plan can begin.
The Residential Treatment program is for patients who are stable enough to fully engage in the therapeutic process. Patients at this level of care will begin treatment in a medically-monitored environment and will be supervised on a 24-hour basis in order to ensure the safety. Focus is placed on helping individuals become emotionally stabilized, knowledgeable about their addiction, and develop the skills needed to take an active approach in their recovery.
Male and Female Extended Residential Treatment programs are available for patients who have completed primary care. Both of these programs pick up where primary treatment ended allowing patients the opportunity to continue to strengthen already-learned recovery skills which aims to increase their chances of living a life substance free. This program is a minimum of three months, consisting of three different phases. Each phase addresses and reinforces specific skills that are needed in order to be successful with sobriety.
Each one of our programs here at Acadiana Treatment Center provides a number of therapeutic approaches. Some of the techniques we employ include:
Individual Therapy – Each patient on our inpatient unit receives a minimum of one individual therapy session per week, but will usually get 2 to 3 sessions on average.
Group Therapy – Group therapy is a major component of the addiction programs here at Acadiana. Group sessions are comprised of both process and psych-educational meetings where individuals are encouraged to work together to help in the recovery process.
Family Therapy – We know how important family members are to the recovery process so we encourage their involvement as much as possible. In additional to our 3-day family workshop, individual sessions will be held to help work through issues that may have been caused by your addiction.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – This approach helps patients identify and alter maladaptive thought processes in order to promote a change in behavior. This therapy is also used to help recognize situations most likely to trigger substance abuse and learn to either avoid or cope with those triggers.
Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) – Similar to CBT, REBT works to change irrational thoughts and learn to accept of the past by focusing on the current issues at hand.
Motivational Interviewing – Through careful questioning therapists work to build trust and rapport with the client. The focus of this technique is to elicit a desire for change and to take action to reach set recovery goals.
In addition to our established therapeutic modalities, we also offer several experiential opportunities. Depending upon your program, you may participate in the following:
- A.A. and N.A.
- Vocational planning
- Art therapy
- Spiritual counseling
Codeine abuse treatment levels and continuing care
Just because your treatment program has come to an end does not mean that your recovery process is over. At Acadiana we provide all clients with continuity of care that allows them to stay successful in their sobriety. In order to ensure a smooth transition into your next step of treatment, an aftercare plan will be developed with future goals in mind. Treatment staff recommendations will also be included.
For individuals who are ready to be discharged home and integrate back into their community, we will provide referrals for traditional outpatient therapy. This way individuals can still get support they need and be able to work through any issues that should arise.
If you decide to stay at Acadiana for your next recovery phase we have several programs specifically designed to help those with addiction problems. Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) provides daily comprehensive services through individual, group, and family therapy in addition to participation in self-help support groups. This is a structured environment and individuals in this program are provided with lodging throughout their stay.
Our Intensive Outpatient Program is for individuals who no longer need an intensive structured program. Individuals enrolled in this program have reached a point in their recovery where they are able to fully engage in a 12-step program and live with limited supervision. The program provides the same services as our PHP, but only meets in the evenings for 10 hours a week. Each client will be assigned a counselor to help monitor their progress.
