Learn More About Dilaudid Addiction Recovery at Acadiana Treatment Center

Dilaudid, the trade name for a drug called hydromorphone, is a highly potent narcotic analgesic from the opioid class of drugs. A morphine derivative (albeit 6-9 times stronger than morphine), Dilaudid is a semi-synthetic painkiller that is used most commonly in the hospital setting for moderate-to-severe pain management. Dilaudid is generally administered via IV and the effects are noted to be apparent within 15 minutes and last over six hours. Used most often to treat the intense pain of major burns, non-remitting cancers, myocardial infarctions or bone injuries, Dilaudid attaches to the receptors located along the spinal cord, brain, and within the GI tract to dull pain. Dilaudid, like other narcotics, also works by reacting with the pleasure center of the brain, allowing individuals to feel a sense of euphoria.

Also known as “hospital heroin,” on the streets, the effects of Dilaudid include analgesia, antitussive properties, as well as a sense of overarching well-being. It is these intense feelings of well-being that can lead to many individuals to become addicted to this narcotic. Many individuals who take Dilaudid become physically tolerant to the effects of the drug, requiring greater amounts of the drug to achieve the same euphoric effects. This means that if the drug is abruptly discontinued, withdrawal effects may set in. Individuals who abuse more of the hydromorphone may be unknowingly subjecting themselves to unintentional overdose.

Many individuals who become addicted to hydromorphone opt to augment the high they obtain from this substance with other drugs. Some opt to mix the Dilaudid with alcohol or benzodiazepines as a way to increase the feelings of pleasure. Unfortunately, this combination can lead to fatal respiratory depression and death. Others mix hydromorphone with stimulants such as cocaine or methamphetamines to tone down the rush from these drugs. This mixture can also be fatal as the combination of an upper and downer can lead to heart attack, circulatory system collapse, and death.

Addiction to Dilaudid is a very dire addiction that requires intervention, proper rehab, and sufficient skills to maintain sobriety.

Learn About the Treatment Approaches We Use for Dilaudid Addiction at Acadiana

Acadiana is a 12-step abstinence addiction recovery center that uses the most up to date treatment modalities to help those with chemical dependency issues. We recognize that not everyone with substance abuse problems can be treated with the exact same treatment, which is why we offer a multitude of therapeutic approaches. You and your treatment team will decide, based on your initial assessment, which program would be best for you and which therapies will be included in your recovery plan. We believe that you are fully capable of taking charge of your own recovery and we are going to do everything in our power to make that happen. Depending on the results of your assessment you will be enrolled in our Detox Program, Residential Program, or our extended Residential Program.

The Residential Program here at Acadiana provides patients with 24 hours of medical monitoring. This full time surveillance is necessary in order to ensure the safety of every patient that is staying with us. This program focuses on emotional stabilization, addiction education, and promoting the development of recovery skills.

The Extended Residential Program is only for those patients who have completed primary care either at Acadiana or another addiction center. This program starts where the primary care program left off, expanding on the knowledge already gained. Extended residential care programs are used to help increase a patient’s chance at successfully living a life free from the clutches of opiate abuse.

Medically Managed Detox – The detox program helps those who are physically dependent on substances like Dilaudid. This program involves around the clock supervision in order to provide the best possible care. We provide medication management in order to detox you as safely and comfortably as possible.

Individual Therapy – We know that each patient needs time where they can directly work with a therapist without the distraction of other group members. For this reason we provide at least one individual session per week, but we try to include an average of 2-3 sessions each week.

Group Therapy – We use groups to educate individuals on issues related to addiction and to provide process based groups where individual can work through common concerns together. Working together promotes group cohesion and helps patients practice newly acquired social skills. In the beginning of group sessions patients will be asked to share autobiographies that they have written so they can better get to know one another.

Family Therapy – We believe that family support is a critical part of the recovery process and so we include loved ones in as many aspects of the treatment process that we can. Additionally, we hold a 3 day family workshop where family members can learn more about addiction.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – We use CBT to help you work on negative emotions related to your disorder and your life in general. When these emotions are identified we will work with you to make behavioral changes that will promote better life outcomes.

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy – REBT is similar to CBT in that it works with patients trying to replace their irrational beliefs with more realistic ones. Time is also spent on learning to balance tolerance with negative emotions and the acceptance of past events.

We also have non-traditional options to help you achieve your recovery goals.  These may include:

  • Nutrition
  • Recreation
  • Meditation
  • Vocational assistance
  • Art Therapy
  • Spiritual counseling

Continuing Care

Dilaudid abuse treatment levels and continuing care

At Acadiana we are committed to providing the best treatment and quality continuity of care. We want patients to be fully prepared by time of discharge so that they are able to properly handle stressors and prevent a relapse. Staff members will work with you well in advance so that transition into the next step of your recovery can be as smooth as possible.

We provide two step down programs that are available for our clients. Our Partial Hospitalization Program is a full day program that is structured similarly to our other programs, but on a less intensive level. This program is for patients who no longer need 24 hour care. Our Intensive Outpatient Program also provides similar services, such as individual, group, and family therapy, but is only held in the evenings. The requirements for participation in this program are that individuals be able to fully engage in a 12-step recovery program and require minimum supervision. These programs are designed to help keep you on the right path to recovery once you have left more intensive programs.
