Learn More About OxyContin Addiction Recovery at Acadiana Treatment Center
OxyContin, the brand name for the drug oxycodone, is a semi-synthetic opioid narcotic that’s created from thebaine, an opium poppy derivative. Developed in 1916 to manage moderate-to-severe acute and chronic pain, oxycodone attempts to improve the quality of life for many individuals struggling with pain disorders. Available as a controlled time-released medication, Oxy can provide hours and hours of unremitting pain relief for long-time severe pain sufferers.
Most individuals who take Oxy do so for legitimate medical reasons under the strict supervision of their physician, taking the drug as directed. Others, however, begin to enjoy the pleasurable feelings that are associated with narcotic pain killers. As Oxy is a particularly potent narcotic analgesic, the calming and pleasant feelings are much stronger than a narcotic such as codeine. These individuals may use OxyContin as a way to numb emotional pain, cope with life stressors, or simply get high. Unfortunately, this type of usage of OxyContin can lead to serious side effects.
Called “hillbilly heroin” and “Oxy” on the streets, many individuals have come to rely upon prescription narcotics such as OxyContin, Lortab, Demerol, and Dilaudid in order to cope with unpleasant life circumstances. Many of these individuals become physically and psychologically dependent upon the substance, requiring greater amounts of the drug to achieve the same high. In the event that Oxy is not available, these individuals are liable to go into withdrawal; a highly unpleasant experience.
Many individuals who abuse Oxy will use other types of substances in addition to the OxyContin, which creates further problems. Often combined with other downers such as alcohol or benzodiazepines this can lead to severe respiratory depression and possible overdose. Combined with uppers like Adderall and amphetamines, this combination can cause heart attacks, strokes, coma, or even death.
OxyContin addiction is a serious problem that requires the caring and compassionate staff at Acadiana Treatment Center to overcome. Don’t try to face your addiction alone; let our dedicated staff help you.

Learn About the Treatment Approaches We Use for OxyContin Addiction at Acadiana
Acadiana Treatment Center offers rehab programs to help individuals who are struggling with many different types of addiction problems. Through our detoxification, residential, and outpatient therapy we ensure that patients get the type of treatment to best suit their needs. The treatment process begins with a complete assessment, provided free of charge, in order to determine which program a patient should be placed in.
Detoxification is the first stop for individuals who are so addicted to a substance such as OxyContin that they have become physically dependent on it. Through this 24-hour medically monitored program, patients will be safely and comfortably detoxed by gradually removing the substance from their body. Once detox has been completed the therapeutic phase of rehab can begin.
The Residential Treatment program is for patients who have completed detox and are stable enough to fully engage in the therapeutic process. This program also provides 24-hour monitoring in order to ensure safety for all individuals. The focus of residential treatment is emotional stabilization, development of skills necessary to allow patients to take an active approach in their recovery, and to provide a wealth of knowledge about the disease of addiction.
Extended Residential Treatment programs are an option for those individuals who have already completed primary care. The extended residential rehab program is designed to pick up where primary care left off building off of previously established recovery tools. Residents are enrolled in this rehab program for a minimum of three months and will complete three different phases of treatment, each one reinforcing different skills needed for a successful recovery.
Each one of our programs here at Acadiana Treatment Center offers different therapeutic techniques as well as experiential programming. Some of the techniques include:
Individual therapy – Individual sessions are held at least once a week, but we try to make sure that patients get an average of 2 to 3 sessions per week. Sessions will address any patient concerns and monitor progress made in the program.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy is commonly used in addiction treatment because it helps patients identify problem thinking that may have led to their substance abuse. When using this technique emotion management, impulse control, and assertiveness will be addressed in order to make behavioral changes for the better.
Rational-emotive behavioral therapy (REBT) focuses on the negative beliefs that individuals hold and learning how to change those beliefs to more positive ones.
Motivation interviewing – Motivational interviewing is used to motivate individuals to want to make a change for the better. Goals will be set based upon where they would like to be in the future.
Group therapy – In group therapy, patients are encouraged to work together to enhance recovery skills and identify how to deal with relapse triggers. In order to develop a cohesive group, each member is asked to write autobiographies about themselves that they will share with the group so they are able to get to know one another. Group sessions are a combination of education and process-based covering such topics as coping skills, problem solving, anger management, relapse prevention, and relaxation techniques.
Family therapy – Family therapy helps the individual and loved ones work through issues that may have been brought on by the addiction. Family sessions are held on a weekly basis, providing support to family members who are dealing with addiction.
Family workshop – The family workshop is a 3 day program meant to educate family members, reopen lines of communication, and help integrate the individual back into the family dynamic.
In addition to therapeutic techniques we offer a wide variety of experiential programs. Some of these programs may include:
- Recreational therapy
- A.A. and N.A. meetings
- Art therapy
- Spiritual counseling
- Vocational assistance
OxyContin addiction treatment levels and continuing care
When you have reached the end of your residential rehab treatment, our treatment staff will work with you to start the aftercare plan put together by you and the recommendations of the treatment staff. Continued care makes sure there is not a lapse in treatment and provides additional support for those who are still working toward recovery. Acadiana offers a few different programs that have proven to be effective.
Our partial hospitalization with provided lodging, is available for patients who are still dealing with chemical dependency problems but no longer need the intensive 24-hours of supervised care. This program provides comprehensive medical, psychological, and psychosocial care. Patients will attend group sessions, individual therapy, family programs, as well as addiction support groups.
The intensive outpatient program is for individuals who have been successfully integrated into a 12-step recovery group and need only minimal supervision. These individuals currently live in a supportive and stable environment. This is an evening program with 10 hours of therapy a week including a combination of educational groups, process groups, individual therapy, and group therapy. Individuals in this program will be assigned an individual counselor with whom they will meet with regularly to monitor progress.
Finally, outpatient therapy is there for individuals who need help processing through various life issues, but only need minimal therapy sessions. The staff at Acadiana will help to find the right therapist for you and your family if this is the best option for you.
