Learn More about Bipolar Disorder Treatment

Learn More About Treatment for Bipolar Disorder at Acadiana Treatment Center

Bipolar disorders are complicated mental illnesses that involve wild swings between positive and negative moods. The individual may go from one extreme mood state to another and back again, and may have periods when they return to neutral. This increases chaos felt by the individual due to the roller coaster of emotions and anxiety as to when the next cycle will begin.

Individuals who have bipolar disorder may have co-occurring disorders such as anxiety, especially regarding the cycles of moods. It’s not unusual for an individual with bipolar disorder to self-medicate to try to relieve the mood states and control anxiety symptoms. Unfortunately, self-medicating can trigger extreme mood swings which increases the feeling of being out of control. Coping with the effects of bipolar disorder, co-occurring anxiety, other mental illnesses, and substance addiction often becomes debilitating for the individual.

At Acadiana, we are here to tell you despite how hopeless you may be feeling, there is help and you can recover. Our staff is trained to provide compassionate, non-judgmental care to those with bipolar disorder. We see every person who comes through our doors as a whole individual and we aim to provide the highest standard of respect and care.

Treatment Approaches

Learn About the Treatment Approaches We Use for Bipolar Disorder at Acadiana

We understand how out of control you feel when suffering from bipolar disorder and we assure you that we provide only the most up-to-date and effective treatments available to help you get your life on the right track. We provide a number of approaches to help you with your difficulties. We believe in approaching bipolar from a multimodal approach which includes medication and psychotherapeutic approaches.

When you come to us and undergo a physical examination, it will be determined whether or not you require detoxification, as many individuals who have bipolar disorder do self-medicate with drugs or alcohol. If it’s determined that your body has become dependent upon drugs or alcohol, we will safely and effectively detox you in our medically-monitored rehab. When you have completed your stay in our rehab, you’ll be ready to effectively engage in your recovery.

At Acadiana Treatment Center, our residential treatment program is offered to clients who do not need detox or have successfully completed our detoxification program. If you do not have a substance abuse problem, this will be where you begin your recovery from bipolar disorder. Individuals in the residential treatment program at our center are monitored 24-hours a day for safety and focuses on building a foundation for recovery from bipolar disorder.

After primary care has been completed, we do offer extended care residential programs for both male and female clients. These programs begin where your initial treatment has left off, ensuring effective continuity of care. Lasting a minimum of three months, and occurring in three different phases, you will learn vital recovery tools, ways to spot triggers, prevention of relapse, and effective coping skills.

Each of our programs at Acadiana is made up of a number of treatment modalities, which may include:

Individual Therapy – Each of our clients is expected to attend one individual therapy session per week, but we’ve found that most prefer more sessions than that. You’ll work to uncover the ways in which bipolar disorder has impacted your life and how to fix the problems that have been caused by the disorder.

Group Therapy – We ask that each member of the group write an autobiography and share it with the rest of the group to bond with one another. We’re proud to offer a combination of process-based and educational groups for you to attend. During group therapy sessions, you’ll connect with others struggling with similar challenges and grow stronger together.

Family Therapy – No one exists in a vacuum which is why we’re proud to offer family therapy sessions. These sessions allow family members to gain insight into your bipolar disorder, ways they can help you, and talk about coping mechanisms for each member of your family unit. We also hold a 3-day family workshop for your family to learn more about bipolar disorder and recovery.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – While medication has proven very effective in controlling the extreme mood states involved in bipolar disorder, the effects on various areas of life often outlast the symptoms. Cognitive behavioral therapy helps you restructure negative thought patterns which produces positive effects on emotions and behavioral patterns.

Rational Emotive Therapy – This type of therapy also focuses on negative thought patterns in addition to helping you better tolerate negative emotions and let go of the past to focus on the present and future.

In addition to these types of therapeutic options, we provide opportunities for non-traditional options to help in your recovery. These include:

  • Art therapy
  • Recreational programming
  • Nutrition counselling
  • Spiritual counseling
  • Meditation
  • Acupuncture
  • A.A. and N.A.

Continuing Care

Bipolar disorder treatment levels and continuing care

We believe in providing you with options that will ensure continuity of care. To that end, we provide several levels of care that you can transition to following discharge from your residential treatment. We provide two outpatient options. Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) provides a high degree of structure and a wide variety of services daily. The philosophy and structure will feel very familiar to what you experienced in our residential program, which makes the transition easier. Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) meets in the evenings providing 10 hours of services a week. This is provided through individual, group and family therapy. If you’re discharging to home, we will work with local area providers to find an appropriate therapist to allow you to continue your care on a strictly outpatient basis.

An assessment is an important first step toward treatment of and recovery from addiction and co-occurring mental health issues.

My husband had a manic episode and needed serious help. I was scared for our family and wasn't sure what to do. Acadiana stabilized his mental condition and taught him ways to manage his newly diagnosed Bipolar II disorder. Now he is back to his old self and our family has never been better.
