Who We Treat
The Acadiana Treatment Center Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) provides long‑term residential services for adolescent girls (ages 12–17) who have significant impairment in behavioral, cognitive, emotional, family, and social functioning.
The PRTF’s intensive psychiatric, medical, psychological, social, nursing, recreational, and educational services are open to all eligible adolescent girls regardless of race, ethnicity, educational history, or social background.
The need for help can come at any time. The admissions team at Acadiana Treatment Center understands this and are here for you 24/7 to begin the admission process. With a simple call from the client’s referent, or parent/legal guardian an admissions specialist will collect and review the prospective client’s history, needs, and treatment goals in order to determine appropriateness for admission. Once that appropriateness has been determined, the admissions specialist will proceed with coordination of admission into the program.
If services to the PRTF are not indicated through this process, we are closely linked to other community services and will facilitate a referral.

Your child will engage in a variety of care modalities and therapeutic interventions during their time in our residential program at Acadiana Treatment Center. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is essential to our healing approach at our residential facility in Sunset, Louisiana, and is the primary modality used in individual and group therapies. This care approach is intended to help your child identify negative thoughts and beliefs so that they can create more positive behavior patterns.
During group therapy sessions, your child can gain insight into a variety of topics, such as coping strategies, family dynamics, medication education, principles of CBT, and behavior management. Group therapy is also an excellent opportunity for your child to connect with peers who are having similar experiences, helping them feel less alone in their struggles with mental illness. They will also learn more about the mental health disorder they are struggling with so that they can understand how to manage their symptoms and function better on a daily basis.
Clients may also participate in other care models and interventions while in the residential program at Acadiana Treatment Center, including:
- Dialectical behavior therapy
- Art therapy
- Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing
- Family therapy
- Motivational interviewing
- Rational emotive behavior therapy
- Seeking Safety
Our expert staff may integrate the 12-Step recovery model as needed. Participating in recreational therapy and learning social skills and independent living skills are other aspects of residential programming that are crucial to healing for adolescent clients.
Our experienced team will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your child’s unique needs to create an individualized care plan. If medication management services are included in your child’s care plan, our medical staff is available to administer and monitor their medications.
Treatment goals for clients in our PRTF include enhanced interpersonal relationships with family members, improved mood, enhanced social functioning, improved academic performance, increased personal responsibility, improved independent functioning, an expanded capacity to appropriately express feelings, and manage impulses.
Through therapy, related activities, and the development of positive working relationships with the members of our treatment teams, clients make beneficial changes that improve their functioning at home, in school, and within the community.
